New Training for Pirates Star

More used to getting to grips with opposing players than investments a Cornish Pirates rugby star is taking stock and getting in shape for the future by taking on a different sort of training.
Pirates scrum half, Ed Fairhurst, is set to begin tackling investments as he embarks on a training programme with Cornish independent financial advisers, Worldwide Financial Planning.
Canadian international, Ed, who joined the Pirates in 2007, is looking to further his options for when he eventually retires from rugby.
“I’m going to be 29 in May and I’m good shape to keep playing for a few more seasons,” said Ed.
“And I really want to help the Pirates secure promotion to the Premiership.
“But as I get closer to 30 I really want to start to think about my long term future.
“So it makes perfect sense for me to start working towards that now.”
Ed’s interest in financial planning came after meeting Pirates’ sponsor and Worldwide’s managing director, Peter McGahan, who also advises the rest of the club.
“Peter comes to most of our games and it’s been good getting to know him. What I’ve found interesting his knowledge of the markets and finance,” said Ed.
“I think financial advice is something that I could really enjoy, and the training will be great as it will help me to understand what a financial adviser does, and how the investment process works.
“And what’s ideal is that I can do this after I’ve finished training for the day.”
To begin with Ed will be working alongside Worldwide’s advisers, Chris Rowe, Robert Stancliffe and Peter Meeson, a former Wasps’ player himself.
“I think it’s a great idea that Ed is thinking about this future. The interesting thing is that Ed, with an economics degree and securities qualification would be in the top 1% of advisers in the UK,” said Peter McGahan.
“He enjoys his rugby but his career will fly by, so it’s important to put plans in place now. I think this applies to everyone really.
“Where he will also benefit by being with us is that we have skilled, award-winning advisers, and one who made the move from rugby to financial advice.”
